History
On May 12, 1902, the Windsor Fire Department was organized for the
protection
of the property within the Town of Windsor. The first
equipment consisted of a hose cart with 550 feet of 2 1/2" hose, a
nozzle, two axes, and four buckets. The fire
alarm was a flanged rim
off of a locomotive engine and was hanging at the
corner of Fourth
and Main Streets. A hammer, with an iron handle and a hole
bored
through it, was chained to the post. In the event of a fire, the rim
was
pounded with the hammer. The first man at the hose cart started
to the fire,
joined by others, as the lead rope was unwound. The cart
had a gong which
rang as they traveled to the fire. The gong let the
firemen know the location of
the cart en route.

In 1914, a chemical cart was added to the equipment. The first
motorized apparatus was added in 1916. A 1914 American LaFrance
chain-driven truck with equipment was purchased from the City of
Greeley. In
1925, it was replaced with a REO
Speedwagon. In 1941,
an International
Howe Pumper was purchased, which is
still fully
operational today as a parade and public relations truck. The
Windsor-Severance
Fire Protection District was formed in 1950.
We
added a 1951 Ford Howe Pumper to cover the rural area. The District
grew
to 110 square miles and covered the towns of Windsor,
Severance and Weld and Larimer Counties. |
